Hi Trish: I use Cymbalta for abdomen, neck and hand pain and Fibromyalgia. There are some unpleasant side effects such as nausea and being light headed upon standing being the worst for me. I couldn't take the side effects from either of those two. Without it my pains levels are considerably higher. All in all, it's well worth the unpleasant side effects for me. My doctor had prescribed me Cymbalta for nerve pain, as I suffer with Degenerative Disk Disease and Sciatica. Whether or not you decide to try Cymbalta is strictly between you and your doctor. I found it helped a bit, but haven't taken it since the end of 2008, as I got pregnant. I found that it made me a bit tired in the beginning, but my body soon adjusted. If I recall, it took about 3 weeks before it was really noticeable as effective. In addition to anything I have mentioned, please keep in mind, that while I or others may have extensive knowledge in many areas, you should always seek professional medical advice from your own physician, as it pertains to medical conditions or concerns. Good luck, and if you have any other questions that I can help you with, please feel free to message me directly. Sincerely, Sandi (Dragon1973) Med Help Down syndrome Community Leader & Ds Group Forum Founder/Moderator Hi Trish, I think that I have discussed this before with you. As I said I have taken Cymbalta before and did not not any difference in my sciatica. Duloxetine and venlafaxine are 2 selective SNRIs considered appropriate for neuropathic pain patients, although new data suggest duloxetine may be a superior option to venlafaxine. A new study conducted by researchers based out of the VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, completed a head-to-head analysis between the 2 drugs, examining the percentage of patients able to achieve a therapeutic dose, time taken to reach therapeutic dose, and any adverse effects associated with the treatments. They found significantly more patients were able to achieve a therapeutic dose taking duloxetine. Titrating to a therapeutic dose was also much faster compared to venlafaxine. Duloxetine also appeared to be an effective alternative for patients who had been nonresponders to previous venlafaxine therapy. “When looking at efficacy in neuropathic pain, these medications are thought to be comparable,” because up to this point, there simply has been a lack of research into which medication could be more preferable, lead investigator Kelsie Flynn, Pharm D, told . Given that health care systems base such formulary decisions on cost, generic venlafaxine has been considered the more cost-effective treatment. Review question Does duloxetine work to treat pain generated by nerves when they have been damaged in disease, or the pain caused by fibromyalgia? Background Duloxetine is a drug used to treat depression and urinary urge incontinence (leakage of urine) and it can be also be useful for certain types of pain. Pain can arise spontaneously when there is damage to nerves that carry pain information to the brain (neuropathic pain). When this damage is to nerves outside the spinal cord it is called a of all sorts. Study characteristics We looked at all the published scientific literature and found 18 trials, involving a total of 6407 participants, that were of sufficient quality to include in this . Eight trials tested the effect of duloxetine on painful diabetic neuropathy and six on the pain of fibromyalgia. Three trials treated painful physical symptoms associated with depression and one small investigated duloxetine for the pain from strokes or diseases of the spinal cord (central pain). Duloxetine hydrochloride is a type of antidepressant called a serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). It works by enhancing the activity of the neurotransmitters serotonin and noradrenaline in the brain. Neurotransmitters are natural body chemicals that act as chemical messengers between the nerve cells. Serotonin and noradrenaline are neurotransmitters known to be involved in regulating emotions, mood and behaviour, among other things. In depression and anxiety disorders less serotonin and noradrenaline than normal is released from nerve cells in the brain. Duloxetine works by stopping the serotonin and noradrenaline that has been released from being reabsorbed back into the nerve cells in the brain. This helps to prolong their effects and over time this helps to lighten mood and relieve depression.
