Prednisone how fast does it work

Hi everyone, Can anyone tell me their experiences of how quickly the steroid medication Prednisolone takes to work? I was taking 40mg in the summer (tapering down by 5mg each week so taking 8 weeks to come off it) and it worked at stopping my rectal bleeding after only 5 days. I have been prescribed a further course but this time alongside Mercaptopurine and it's not working this time around. I have been taking both the Predisolone and Mercaptopurine for nearly three weeks now (I'm aware the Mercapto can take up to 3 months to work) and my rectal bleeding is no better. I don't think it's getting much worse to be fair, just not improving. Prednisone is a medication that is often used to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), as well as a host of other diseases and conditions. It can be very effective in getting acute IBD symptoms under control, but the list of potential side effects that this drug can cause is extensive. The good news is that most prednisone side effects will go away as the dose is lowered and then the drug is stopped altogether. One of the goals of treating IBD is to use prednisone sparingly and to get patients off it as soon as possible. Knowing about the potential for side effects goes a long way towards minimizing them and coping with them when they do happen. If your doctor has prescribed prednisone, it's because the benefits of the drug outweigh the risks of the side effects. Below is a discussion of the potential prednisone side effects, when they occur, which are temporary, and which could be permanent.

I've been in terrible pain for a couple weeks b/c of arthritis. and I found some old prednisone while cleaning the cabinet today. I took it for 2 years because of a blood disorder and I had to wean off of it. I feel so good, no pain from my arthritis and I usually end up doing cleaning projects because I feel so great. I hate to go on it but then when I do I feel so muh better that I hate to get off it. I know when I take it i take it everyday then my doctor weans me off it so be careful :) Yes, be careful of all of the prednisone side effects and be sure you don't just stop taking it. Prednisolone is a type of medicine known as a corticosteroid or steroid. Corticosteroids are not the same as anabolic steroids. Prednisolone is used to treat a wide range of health problems including allergies, blood disorders, skin diseases, infections, certain cancers and to prevent organ rejection after a transplant. It also damps down your immune system, which can help in autoimmune illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, where your immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. Prednisolone is available only on prescription as tablets and as a liquid to drink. It can also be given by injection but this is usually only done in hospital. It's important to take prednisolone as your doctor has advised. The usual dose varies between 5mg and 60mg daily - 1ml of liquid prednisolone is usually equal to 10mg.

Patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis have various serious complications which require multiple drugs for therapeutic or prophylactic use. Majority of the drugs are primarily metabolized and excreted by hepatobiliary system; hence, liver cell necrosis contributes to impaired drug handling in liver failure while portosystemic shunt can alter drug action in cirrhosis. Hence, in order to decide drug dosing in liver failure, 3 important factors need to be considered (1) pharmacokinetic alterations of drugs, (2) pharmacodynamic alteration of drugs, and (3) increased susceptibility of patients to adverse events particularly hepatotoxicity. Though there is no predictable test which can be used to determine drug dosage in patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis, drugs with first pass metabolism require reduction in oral dosages, for high clearance drugs both loading and maintenance dosages need adjustment, for low clearance drugs maintenance dose needs adjustment, whenever possible measuring drug level in the blood and monitoring of adverse events frequently should be done. No evidence-based guidelines exist for the use of medication in patients' with liver cirrhosis. There are hardly any prospective studies on the safety of drugs in cirrhotic patients. Ovarian cancer is one of the most common lethal gynecological malignancies world-wide. Despite an initial 70–80 % response rate, most patients relapse within 1–2 years and develop chemo-resistance. Hence, the identification of novel drugs or the repositioning of known drugs to re-sensitize ovarian cancer cells to existing chemotherapy regimens is needed. Here, we evaluated the effect of metformin (an anti-diabetic drug) on ovarian cancer cells, based on its putative effect on other solid tumors. Primary cultures of epithelial ovarian cancer cells established from ascitic fluids of untreated ovarian cancer patients and the SKOV-3 ovarian cancer-derived cell line were used. The respective cells were treated with metformin, carboplatin and paclitaxel alone and its various combinations and their effects, including the ability to induce apoptosis, were examined. Concomitantly, the cells were assessed for the expression of several apoptosis-related m RNAs and proteins using quantitative real time PCR, flowcytometry and Western blotting.
