To prevent malaria, chloroquine tablets must be taken before, during, and after travel to a malaria zone. When treating the condition in adults, chloroquine is usually taken twice a day for one day and then once a day for two more days. A child's chloroquine dosage will be determined by his or her weight. The excretion of chloroquine and the major metabolite, desethylchloroquine, in breast milk was investigated in 11 lactating mothers following a single oral dose of chloroquine 600 mg basemaximum daily dose of the drug that the infant received from breast-feeding was about 0.7% of the maternal start dose of the drug in malaria chemotherapy. Where complete treatment of severe malaria is not possible but injections are available, give adults and children a single intramuscular dose of artesunate, and refer to an appropriate facility for further care. Where intramuscular artesunate is not available use intramuscular artemether or, if that is not available, use intramuscular quinine.

Both drugs may be needed for a complete cure and to prevent the return of infection (relapse). In some cases, you may need to take a different medication (such as primaquine) to kill the malaria parasites living in other body tissues.
