Oct 29, 2009 Hi Lucy, I hope the brand plaq works better for you! Plaq can be rough on the stomach, my rheumy started me off very slowly so don't give up on it! The first ANA I had was 0 in 2004 then a year later after being on Plaq it was and hasn't been checked since then. The Rheum MD just called telling me my labs were normal and my ANA was just under 1.6 & Vit D 34 abn less 30 so he felt I did not have Lupus but to stay on the Lyrica. He said my other labs were also normal. My concern is that I have been on Plaquenil for a while now, can it cause a false negative ANA? Plaquenil is a slow-acting drug, meaning that it can take up to 6 months to experience the full benefits of this medication, but it is possible for symptoms to improve in as few as 1 or 2 months. Plaquenil and other antimalarials are the key to controlling lupus long-term, and some lupus patients may be on Plaquenil for the rest of their lives.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

  6. Feb 09, 2012 Plaquenil is a good drug once you fight the side effects- I take both at night and sleep through them usually. Unfortunately my lupus is no longer controlled by just that anymore despite what my rheumo says, I have severe memory loss, seizures, and 3 small strokes along with constant headaches and tremors.
