It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes, which transmit the parasites that cause the infection, usually in tropical and subtropical parts of the world.

It's also a common symptom from Lupus itself. I threw up several times a week for the first few years, then we discovered my esophagus muscles don't work and I have GERD. Now I have good meds to control it. You will feel like once one thing gets better something else will happen and you will continually be seeing docs and trying meds. Plaquenil is a slow-acting drug, meaning that it can take up to 6 months to experience the full benefits of this medication, but it is possible for symptoms to improve in as few as 1 or 2 months. Plaquenil and other antimalarials are the key to controlling lupus long-term, and some lupus patients may be on Plaquenil for the rest of their lives. Just started a week ago- supposed to take a month of 2 to kick in- but so far so good. I couldn't live without plaquenil and wholeheartedly recommend it- don't be afraid to try it because it could make a huge difference for you like it did for me.

For example, it may be combined with an antibiotic to treat chronic Q-fever, which humans usually catch from farm animals or raw milk. Plaquenil is used to treat other types of infections too.

  3. I have been recently diagnosed with Lupus about 4 months ago and have started plaquenil with the hope it would relieve my symptoms no energy, achy body and severe hair loss. It seems as though it has helped the first two symptoms, but I have horrible constipation. I have tried everything- I exercise every day, drink a ton of water, eat fiber like it’s going out of style, follow a gluten.

So I ran out of my plaquenil and the Rheum. that prescribed it I am no longer seeing and wont re-fill it and I dont see my new Rheum. until Decemeber 23rd. I am nervous to see what will happen. The pharmacist said there wont be any danger just stopping it. Im just nervous to see what my body will do. Has anyone gone off the plaquenil and what happened? I hear my new Rheum. is all for it so I. Yes, if the plaquenil controls your Lupus flares, it is best to not use the prednisone. I hope you can get off of it completely, or at least take a small maintenance dose. Take it very slow, tapering off, and if you have a reaction, severe fatigue, etc, talk to your doc, about tapering down even slower. The usual starting dose of Plaquenil is 200 mg twice a day or 400 mg once a day, administered orally, in people weighing 80 kg or more. The usual dosage works for most people who take Plaquenil, but it is possible to increase or decrease the dose based on individual needs. It's important to watch for possible side effects and toxicity.
